Schloss Tirol: illustrating & animating for a cultural institution with great history
A few months ago salon alpin an me were asked to illustrate and animate a film for the next exhibition in the great castle of south tirol CASTEL TIROLO. Hosting all sorts of exhibitions, events and concerts, they realized it was time to dedicate a special exhibition to the beauty of the castle itself. A homage to all its amazing details you might not look at, when they are hosting other shows. So our brief was to tell the story around the great, artistic portals the castle is built around.
After a few talks it became pretty clear, that we want to tell the story in rather painterly illustrated scenes. scenes, that would work individually and as single frames but become some how magical when they are animated and "alive". The brief also wanted us to work without any voice over, since in south tirol most of the visitors are a mix of german speaking and italian speaking visitors. Since we wanted to cater to all languages, we tried to tell the story without any spoken or written word. Which was nearly impossible. In the end we did some testing an figured that bilingual subs help and guide the best and also suites the paste of our storytelling.
So on on hand i loved to work with art historians that were always very very keen on visualizing all the states of the castel and the surroundings correctly and on the other hand I loved the fact that we all worked together and made decisions that helped the film in every stage.
Personally this project pushed my out of my comfort zone a lot, since my "painting practice" had become a little lazy before we started. Painting most of the scenes and directing the whole party was quite something. But i am proud of the little film we created as a team. Thumbs up to daniela leitner for some amazing character designs and style frames, matthias hacksteiner for some walt disney like music, lwz for helping us with some crazy animation shizzle and salon alpin for the way we work together on any project theses days.
Since we still have to upload the final film to vimeo here are just a lot of stills. The film will be published soon!
